Our members are trained to fight fires, fire prevention and education, save lives and protect each other. We often don’t think about ourselves in the event we could have an emergency on the fire ground. The Safety, Survival and Education Section of IAFC, along with the National Volunteer Fire Council, Hosted 2017 Safety Stand Down week from June 18 – June 24. The goal of this week is to educate fellow firefighters on safety and health education and training. This year’s theme focused on MAYDAY, Self Rescue and Rapid Intervention. These are all necessary tools to operate well on the fire ground. You can read more information about Safety Stand Down week here.
For the Tuesday training, June 20, Ralston Fire brought in an outside instructor to educate our members on MAYDAY and Medical Responses to down firefighters. We had approximately 15 members consisting of those with experience and brand new candidates. The training lasted approximately 3 hours and members worked on many skills. Instructor David Mellen, of Reno Township Fire Department, taught members use of their DRD, calling MAYDAY’s on the radio, RIT, down firefighter drills and common medical emergencies that occur with firefighters while operating on the fire ground.
